After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch (South
Africa) in 1978, Bruce spent three years as a houseman and working
as a Medical Officer in a Mission Hospital in northern rural South
Africa. Training in Clinical Pathology commenced in 1982 at the
University of the Free State followed by working for a year as a
Consultant in the Haematology Department and the Platelet Research
Unit of the same University.
Bruce then completed six years in a private Pathology
practice in Johannesburg before emigrating to New Zealand. After
working initially at Middlemore Hospital and in a private
Laboratory in Christchurch he joined Medlab Hawkes Bay as
Pathologist/CEO in 1995. In 1997 Medlab Hawkes Bay amalgamated with
Medlab Central and he was then assigned responsibility for
overseeing the Biochemistry department at Medlab Central.
He is an active participant in the RCPA CPD programme and a
member of the Chemical Pathologist's Credentialing Group held
in Christchurch and convened by Associate Prof Chris Florkowski of
Canterbury Health Laboratories. He regularly attends relevant
Professional meetings in Australasia and abroad. An interest in all
areas of Biochemistry are maintained with a special interest in
Endocrinolgy.
